California Licensing Requirements
STEPS TO RECEIVING A DRIVER’S LICENSE IN CALIFORNIA
FOR PERSONS UNDER 18 YEARS OLD:

STEP 1 - Complete an approved Driver Education course.
STEP 2 - Pre-enroll in behind the wheel driver training.
STEP 3 - Take a written test at the DMV when you are at least 15 1/2
years old to obtain permit.
STEP 4 - Start driving lessons with an approved driving school. At least
six hours are required.
STEP 5 - Practice at least 50 hours with a California licensed driver aged
25 or older, ten of which must be at night.
STEP 6 - Hold the instructional permit at least 6 months and be at least 16
years old.
STEP 7 - Take a driving test at the DMV to receive a provisional driver’s
license.

STEPS TO RECEIVING A DRIVER’S LICENSE IN CALIFORNIA
FOR PERSONS 18 YEARS AND OLDER.

STEP 1 - Take a written test at the DMV to obtain a permit.
STEP 2 - Return to the DMV when you think you are ready to pass the
behind the wheel driver's exam to get your license.
NOTE: You must wait at least one day between the written and driving
exams.
RESTRICTIONS TO THE PROVISIONAL LICENSE FOR
PERSONS UNDER THE AGE OF 18.

1. For the first year, the license holder may not drive between the hours of
11:00 pm and 5:00 am.
2. For the first year the license holder may not drive with any individual in
the car who is under the age of 20 unless there is a licensed 25 or older
individual present in the front passenger seat.

NOTE: If you turn 18 during the first year, these restrictions automatically
expire.
